The previous Audi Q5 was the best selling Audi SUV with 1.6 million shifted. They’re anticipating as much success with the new version having invested $1.3bn in a dedicated plant in Mexico. In fact I think they may need more than one plant. The old Q5 was worthy but dumpy, but the new version keeps the worthiness and add dynamism – and in the case of the SQ5 – like you wouldn’t believe.

The Q5 starts at AED184k ($50k) and comes with a 2.0 TFSI putting out 252bhp with a 0-100kph time of 6.7 seconds – two-tenths quicker than before. It employs a 7-speed dual clutch auto.

The SQ5 starts at AED249k ($68K) and uses a new 3.0 V6 Turbo to push out 354bhp for a 0-100kph time of 5.4 seconds, has permanent all-wheel drive and has an 8-speed Tiptronic. It also gets a bodykit.

They’re both very practical and well thought-out and even the Q5 is a far better drive than before, doing a reasonable job of road-holding and getting on with getting on.

The SQ5 is something of a wolf in mother sheep’s clothing though. It growls angrily, is astonishingly agile on its feet, is up for a race from the lights, serves up a dollop of thrust whenever you need it, and actually will make you giggle and laugh out loud with just how much fun it can be to peddle.

So forget the Macan, get yourself in an Audi SQ5 if you’re in the market for a premium-level city-sized family-mover that’s got an hidden arsenal of firepower and moves like Jagger.
