2016 Chevrolet Spark video review

Big value, little runabout with executive-level kit – what’s not to like?

If you like a small car with a big heart – and I don’t mean in terms of an engine, but in generosity of equipment and tech – look no further. Check out our 2016 Chevrolet Spark video review by clicking below.

Since it was introduced in 1998, the Chevrolet Spark has sold about a million units and for 2016 it’s an all-new car with a longer wheelbase, though lowered by 40mm for better aero qualities along with a stronger body it’s claimed.

Upfront there’s the family Chevy dual-port grille and as befits small cars, it has a purposeful wheel-at-each-corner stance – which ensures it has agile handling.

Quick and darty too now that the 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine has 16% more power with 100bhp. And whilst CVT gearboxes generally feel like they sap power, the one in this car has excellent simulated step-changes that give you a satisfying sense of change up through the gears on acceleration.

To drive it feels plenty quick enough all things considered, and its diminutive dimensions and responsive steering ensure it’s a joy to peddle in traffic around town, flitting through gaps and snapping into car parking spaces with joy. It doesn’t do too badly on the longer run or when hurling it through a corner either, but it’s happiest in town.

You’re happiest behind the wheel because the rear compartment would only work for adults if there were up to four small to regular sized humanoids aboard. Or the rear compartment was left to children – its rather tight. No complaints up front though, and boot space is average.

The key selling point is the level of spec in the range-topping LT version which retails at AED43,500 ($11,850) and comes with cruise control, and lots of standard kit including a decent infotainment screen that also enables Apple Carplay and Android Auto.

Verdict

Prices start at just AED33,580 ($9,150) for the LS version with a manual, but you want a bit of kit with this car, because that’s where the appeal really lies, so skip over the mid-priced LS CVT at AED37,000 ($10k) and head straight for the still-reasonably priced AED43,500 ($11,850).

Not the most spacious in its class, but very well appointed and rather entertaining to drive. Ideal for a new driver that doesn’t want to feel they bought a ‘cheap’ first car, or a young couple on the go.

If I have one complaint, it would be that the fun-factor could be ramped up even higher if they just introduced a manual on the top spec LT version too – but sadly that’s probably just me and most buyers would be content with the CVT. Fortunately it’s a good one.
