This was Captain Nemo’s car in the 2003 movie, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and it’s up for sale. Captain Nemo was played in the movie by legendary Indian actor and Bollywood superstar, Naseeruddin Shah.

The design of the amazing vehicle was inspired by the Hindu god Ganesha and the nearly 7m long car featured an intricate ivory colour fibreglass body with elaborate embellishments in aged gold effect on the exterior and inside the car.

Jule Verne created the character of Captain Nemo for his book ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea’ all the way back in 1870. The character was also known as Prince Dakkar and was the son of an Indian Raja as well as a scientific genius whose incredible submarine, Nautilus, explores the depths of the ocean.

The underpinnings of this actual Naseeruddin Shah Nautilus car are perhaps less exotic though as it was based on a Land Rover Defender fire tender, adapted via a steel frame and featuring the venerable Rover V8 engine, adjustable hydraulic suspension and 28-inch wheels.

It was created by production designer and art director Carol Spier and a second version was also made, but that was only for close-up shots and sat on a rig. The car offered for auction is a fully working machine – although not road legal – and is expected to fetch between GBP18-25k at the Blenheim Palace auction on July 11th by Coys.
