At MME, we love initiatives like this. As we all know, Saudi Arabia has a big of problem when it comes to ‘freestyle street drifting’ (‘Hagwalah’ or ‘Tafheet’) – it’s not a sport, it’s not clever, and it is utterly dangerous. It has resulted in human and metal carnage of the roads of that country and needs to be eradicated. But banning or clamping down on stuff just never works.

It’s always better to take that desire to push a vehicle to its limits and learn how to control it, and channel it towards a more constructive approach. In order to do that, you can inspire people towards responsible racing and motorsports requiring genuine skill and ability.

So the KSA Hyundai dealer in Dammam, Al Majdouie, has decided to create not only its own competitive drift team, but also a drift academy, specifically set up to engage with youngsters and teach them the importance of safe driving.

The idea is that the Drift Team will deliver talks and workshops, to race and car fans at each race venue, as well as using social media extensively. The Al Majdouie Racing team is also participating in CSR events with the traffic police in Saudi Arabia to speak to teenagers in school and spread awareness of the dangers of speeding and on public roads.

The team officially launches next year and includes former Formula 3 champion, Sultan Kayello, who is also participating in the Saudi Star Drift Championship in his Hyundai Genesis Coupe powered by a 5.0-litre V8 engine producing over 700bhp (same engine that’s in the big Genesis saloon).
