I recently picked up a new diecast model car – the 68 Shelby you see here – and found it interesting to compare to a previous model I had. So here is my Hot Wheels classic Mustangs review – exclusively for you diecast toy and model car collector fans!

The light blue 65 Mustang Fastback is made in Malaysia and copyrighted 2007 & 2012 Mattel. The darker blue 68 Mustang Shelby GT500 is also made in Malaysia but is copyrighted 2012. So it’s fair to assume that this is a newer diecast than the 65.

The thing that struck me about the 68 Shelby was just how much more realistic its lines and proportions are to the 65. The light blue car seems to be unnaturally wider and has more squared off sharper-edged lines. Despite being exactly the same scale it feels bigger and broader, whereas a classic Mustang is a narrow car.

However the details on the 65 car are spot on with the shaker hood, cover for the c-pillar window, the more flatter and angular front as well as the curved lower edge of the rear window.

Nonetheless the 68 Shelby, finished in a much nicer and more authentic-looking blue with wide black stripes, just seems far more realistic in its width and length proportions, as well as the fuselage-like profile, tapered lower edges, lower roofline, hunched rear and tauter front.

It also has great details with the side air-intakes, Shelby taillights and the shark nose-style forward jutting front-end.

Both these are certainly great additions to any collection, but the dark blue 68 Shelby from 2012 is definitely a nicer, more accurate and desirable model to have.

I picked it up in Hamleys in Dubai for AED15.
