Though it’s little known here in the Gulf, the Mazda MX-5 Miata is a hugely important car. The world’s best selling roadster, the car that brought affordable British style motoring back to the masses (without the breakdowns!) it’s also one of the world’s very best cars to drive.

I should know – I bought a third-gen Miata and rate it much higher than the Toyota 86 I also owned. And now the new one’s here.

As is the case with modern cars, Mazda is being hugely stingy with the details. About the only thing we know for sure is that it’s 99kg lighter than my car. That would it make an absolutely featherweight 1000kg. Power will come from a 2.0-litre SkyActiv engine and go to the rear wheels via either a six-speed auto or manual. If you’re buying the Fiat version of this car, you’re looking at a 1.4-litre turbo and an Alfa dual-clutch system.

For now, feast your eyes on the new MX-5 body. It’s not what I expected – less classic roadster and more S2000, hard edged fenders. You can see the Kodo design influences, it’s lower and wider, and the callbacks to the original ’89 car in the teardrop headlamps. That, and the 16” wheels!

I’ll have no argument about the interior – it’s gorgeous.

The 2016 MX-5 Miata will be available late next year, as a 2016 model. I can’t wait to drive it.
