This whole post is a terrible tease, because we will likely never get the GMC Canyon. Such a shame as well, as this handsome GMC version of the midsize Chevrolet Colorado boasts perfect proportions and tough, macho styling in dimensions that actually allow it to park in the average Dubai Mall.

As many of you will know, I’ve got a soft spot for commercial vehicles and the Canyon rubs it so hard I’m redder than Santa Claus. It’s a perfect facsimile of its square-jawed Sierra 1500 big brother, never a bad thing. Under the hood, there are no V8s, but a perfectly acceptable 2.5-litre 193bhp/184lb ft  four-cylinder engine and the always-welcome 3.6-litre V6, in this application good for 302bhp/270 lb ft. Three trims levels will be available in the US, a long bed single cab, a short bed double cab and a long-bed double cab, all with six-speed autos, though the base 2WD 2.5 gets a manual.

Inside, there’s the usual assortment of apps and connectivity options. Gone are the days when commercial vehicle buyers could expect wind up windows and an ash tray – this has 4G Onstar connectivity with onboard Wi-Fi , forward collision alert, lane departure, and so on.

Unfortunately, there’s no word on whether we’ll get it in this region. Confused because the Colorado is on sale at local dealerships? Ah, but that noticeably-different car comes from Thailand and is targeted at businesses whereas this GMC – like all GMCs really – is meant to be a slightly fancier lifestyle vehicle and is built solely in the US alongside the American-spec Colorado. Bring it here GM!
